Qualitative Evaluation of a Program on Self-care and Health Education for Diabetics

Miguel Angel Santos-Guerra

Juan Fernandez-Sierra

University of Almería, Spain

Educational evaluators in Spain were called in by a hospital department to conduct an external evaluation of a health and self-care education program for diabetics. The qualitative methodology proposed contrasted with the medical research paradigm familiar to hospital staff. Feedback of early results, whilst critical, provoked dialogue within the department. A second stage brought the evaluation into closer contact with the program and medical consultations with patients. The article reports on findings from the evaluation for the hospital department and the lessons learned by the evaluators.
